Analysis of Music Genres

Music videos are extremely important in building a relationship between the artist and the audience as it allows them to see the artists lifestyle and it helps them to understand the lyrics more. There are many different music genres, and each genre comes with its own music video characteristics, such as; rap music videos usually contain provocative women and expensive jewellery, and dance music videos usually contain lots of performance based shots of people dancing, fun and bright atmospheres and expensive cars.

Drake - Over (Rap)

Drake's music genre is rap and his audience consists of mainly females aged 16 to 25, the music video for Over shows the craziness of Drake's overnight rise to fame and how much has changed in his life. The music video starts with a long shot of Drake sitting on the end of a bed, this quickly changes to a close up using a jump cut. an effect is used to make Drakes silhouette flash with different images and colours, which looks like fire. When the shot changes back to a long shot of Drake sitting on the end of a bed we are able to see the setting behind him, which consists of different projected moving images, such as a road and busy streets, on the walls behind him.
Throughout the video fast pace editing is used, especially when the backgrounds changed, this excites the audience as it matches the quick lyrics and his previous life. it also informs the audience that his life is moving at a much quicker pace that his previous life was, which also establishes his style.
After the lyrics 'But it's far from over' are said the first time the editing effect, fade, this effect helps show the audience that the song has moved on and reflects what Drake was saying in his lyrics. The fade effect is important as it slows the music video down for a few seconds to show the audience the main points in his life.
Another long shot is used when Drake is standing on the left hand side of the screen in front of a plain white wall singing the lyrics 'I know way too many people here right now that I didn't know last year, who the f*** are y'all?'. Whilst he sings these words a moving image of lots of people walking is projected onto the screen which strongly relates to the lyrics. Soon after this the music, lyrics and video slows down for a few seconds which creates a dramatic effect, and to support this a slow explosion is projected onto the wall. The speed then picks back up again as a close up of Drake rapping on the left side of the screen, the fire from the explosion in the previous frame continues into this shot as it is edited over the footage with the words 'One thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain' coming up quickly in bold white writing at the same time as Drake sings them. Also at this point a low angle is used which gives Drake power and authority.
After this the shot changes to a distorted image of Drake rapping, and this makes the visuals reflect the lyrics as when the screen goes distorted he sings the words 'And I swear I got the s*** that makes these bitches go insane'.
A characteristic of most rap genre music videos is then shown to us as a pretty women appears on the screen acting provocatively. is shown to us in a shot which involves the colour gold a lot, which connotes richness and value. The colour gold and Drakes ability to rap relates to Dyer's theory, Paradox 1, as Drake is shown as an ordinary person with his clothing, but his ability to rap and dance so well gives him an extraordinary quality. The whole video relates to the rap genre as it defines Drake's emotion/life that he has been through and the audience would be interested in watching this as this is a typical convention and the audience are interested in learning more about the artist.

Flo Rida - Club can't handle me ft. David Guetta (Dance)

Flo Rida is a popular artist who performs under the genre of dance music, his target audience consists of people aged 16-25 who enjoy the music genre dance. The music video for 'Club can't handle me' is mainly performance based, which is common for dance videos, and it is based around a party atmosphere with clips form the film Step Up 3, as the song was created for this movie.
The music video begins with a long shot of two expensive cars outside a busy club, the use of the props, the expensive cars, is a typical aspect of music videos of the dance genre as they show wealth and power and show that the artist(s) have an expensive lifestyle. This helps the audience build a relationship with the artist as it enables them to see the artists lifestyle and what it is like to be the artist, this will make the audeince to continue to watch the music video as they will want to lewarn more about the artist, as they may aspire to be just like him. Another long shot is used which also helps to express the artists expensive and fun lifestyle, in this shot we see Flo Rida singing to the camera with a large crowd dancing to his music around him. In terms of mise-en-scene and costumes, in the long shot you can see that Flo Rida is wearing a large gold chain which again shows his admirable, rich lifestyle.
In addition, a close up is used when Flo Rida was singing and dancing to the camera and this further shows off his expensive jewellery and emphasises the fun and enthusiastic atmosphere of the song and music video, which is a typical feature of a dance genre music video.
Further on through the video a split screen is used to show on one side the lively party atmosphere i the club, and on the other side a deserted street, this exaggerates how fun and enthusiastic the atmosphere is inside the club when the music is being played, compared to the empty streets. Furthermore, an aerial shot is used to show us the vast crowd and show us how they are all having fun and dancing to the music. Having people dance in a music video of the dance genre is an extremely important aspect and most dance artists use this in their music videos.
Throughout the music video clips from the film Step Up 3 are used, as the song was created to be used in this film, and all of the clips show people dancing in time with the music. The whole party atmosphere links strongly with the lyrics as he sings lyrics such as 'the club can't even handle me right now' whilst people are falling through walls as the club is so full.

Fall Out Boy - Dance, Dance (Punk/Rock)

Fall Out Boy are a punk rock band who's main target audience was teenagers and young adults aged around 15-25. Their music video for 'Dance, Dance' is highly performance and narrative based which is common in many rock music videos. The mixture of the two types of music videos allows their audience to see the band they like performing, but also gain a more in depth view into the song and it allows them to understand the band members more, as they are the ones acting, so it also adds a sense of humour. This allows the audience to gain a stronger relationship with the band as they can begin to understand the band members personalities as they act the narrative part of the music video out, and it also helps the audience understand the message behind the song better as they can follow the narratives storyline.
The music video begins with the music playing quietly in the background whilst a variety of shots are being used to show us that a boy is asking a girl to their homecoming dance, an aeriel shot is used to show us the words 'homecoming' burning in the grass to help us understand the narrative. The music then stops as the narrative is played out which shows a typical high school geek taking his date to homecoming and acting nervously. Once they enter the hall where the event is taking place, we are shown a long shot of the band on stage with a large crowd of people in front of them watching them play, it is set out like a typical music gig, but we know that it is continuing with the storyline and that they are actually perfroming at the homecoming.
In the narrative there is also the typical teenage popular couple who try to make fun of the main geeky couple. After this they all join the large crowd watching the band perfrom adn eventually we see another aerial shot but this one shows the geeky boy crowd surfing, this adds humour to the video and the aspect of crowd surfing is a big factor of rock music videos. Throughout the music video there is continous refrence to the link between the lyrics and the visuals as the main lyrics of the song are 'dance, dance' and everyshot appears to have someone dancing in it.
As the song reaches it's climax there are multiple shots of the band jumping around and playing their instruments and this strongly reflects the characteristics of a rock music video. Also during this section of the video it shows the party getting out of control as the teachers go in to panic mode and there are dance offs with people crowding around them, the chaos in this video is also a characteristic of most rock music videos, and also there is a refrence to drugs as the narrative continues and the setting changes to in the boys toilets and a teacher comes into to break them up. The idea of drugs is strongly associated with the whole rock music culture and is usually worked into rock music videos.

Each music genre appears to have varying micro elements, and this is to make the genre distinctive throughout the music video, I can see this by looking at the three music videos I have just analysed. Drake's music video for Over appears to have a more serious meaning and the pace and editing of the video appears to be a lot slower than the pace in Flo Rida's music video. This is to show the different connotations of the music videos genre and to make the visuals relate to the sound and lyrics. All three music videos appear to use many different varieties of shots, sucha as close ups and long shots, but they are all still effective in showing the distinct differences between each music genre. Also, Flo Rida's dance music video uses more props than the other two music videos to show his wealth and luxurious lifestyle, such as expensive cars and jewellery.
The Fall Out Boy song contains is very narrative based which is different to the other music videos, and this shows that the artists in the rock genre take themselves less seriously and the shots of mosh pits and large crowds jumping to their music also strongly relates to the rock genre.

Analysis of a star

CHARLOTTE CHURCH

Charlotte Church came onto the music scene at a very young age singing classical opera, but as she grew older she began to sing pop songs which related more to her age. She began her singing career in 1998 at the age of 12 and became an immediate success, but as she has grown up her music has changed a lot and the messages within her songs and her target audeince has also changed very much.

Just Wave Hello -
Just Wave Hello is one of Charlotte Church's first music video's, and it was filmed in 1999. This music video is from when she first entered the music industry as a classical opera singer. The video is strongly preformance based, but also concept based as the video contains her singing but also shows people from different cultures and religions waving and welcoming people. The videos concept relates to most of the lyrics in terms of the repetitive lines 'wave hello' and 'it's time to go now'. Also the concept of welcoming different people with open arms is strongly shown in the video, and this is the main message in the music video as she is singing about a peaceful world.
This music video has a very innocent ambience about it due to, the classical genre of music, the concept of the video, and the costume that Charlotte Church is in. The long white dress and high neck line express Church's innocence and purity which would appeal to her target audience which would likely be mature women around forty and over, due to the genre of music. The most noticeable aspect of Goodwin's theory in this music video is the frequent use of close ups, this technique would allow the audience to have a clear view of what she looks like and the expression on her face which will link to the tone of the song. As this music video is from when she was first introduced into the music scene it would have been important for the record label to have her identity and image known to everyone, so these close ups would have helped with that aspect.

In this music video Church is seen as both ordinary and extraordinary, which links to Dyer's theory, as her image is a typical young girl but she also has an extraordinary talent, which is being able to sing in a mature opera style.

Crazy Chick -
After a short break in the music industry, In 2005 Charlotte Church returned and reached number two in the UK singles charts with the song 'Crazy Chick', this song, and the album it is on, shows Charlotte taking a new direction into the pop genre. The song reflects her teenage years better than her previous classical career and it also allowed her to produce songs which are targeted at teenagers her own age. This change in music genre definitely attracted a new target audeince to her, as many teenagers will enjoy her pop songs and they will also enjoy her music videos as they show her being a rebellious teenager, so many teenage girls aged around 12 to 18 would aspire to be like Charlotte Church. This music video shows many obvious signs of a change in image and style in Charlotte Church. This long shot from the music video shows her wearing dark revealing clothing which is a dramatic difference from her innocent, pure image in her first music video, as she is now being shown as a provocative woman. The video also contains alcohol, parties and a slight rock chick image. The video is mainly performance based and also has some hints of being concept based, much like the first music video. However, following Goodwin's theory, the many close ups which are used show Charlotte Church in a more mature and sexy way, and the black and white filter gives her a rock chick image.
Also, in relation to Goodwin's theory, there is a link between the lyrics and visuals, as when the words 'you're making me a crazy chick' the close ups of Cahrlotte show her dancing with her wild hair, and the party atmosphere can relate to the words 'crazy chick'. Another thing which has changed in Charlotte Church's music is the message she conveys in her songs, as in her first music video her songs had innocent and pure messages and intentions, but now in her teenage music career the messages in her songs have changed and are now mainly about partying and having fun, and also about boys and relationships. So these new messages in her songs will relate more with her new target audience and relate more to the pop music genre characteristics.

How Not to be Surprised When You're a Ghost -
This extremely new song from Charlotte Church shows how much her and her music has matured since her teenage years. Instead of singing under the classical or pop genre, Church now embarks on the new genre of indie rock, but with a haunting twist on it as the piano creates the perfect atmosphere for the lyrics which are about the inevitable fact that a loved one will die. So as well as the maturity in the music genre, the message of the song and her voice, the lyrics have also matured as they have a more personal meaning. The video is performance and concept based as, although the video is quite strange and creepy (especially from the already perceived image we have of her from her past music), it also has a message that shows how you might expect ghosts to look like, but that you should not be scared or surprised by this. So therefore the lyrics strongly link to the visuals, like Goodwin states in his theory. In addition many close ups are used to show her new sophisticated look and to show us her facial expressions, which tell us that this is a very serious music video compared to her previous ones. Furthermore, as well as her image and music genre changing again, her target audeince has also changed again as her more serious songs and more mature music genre will appeal to young adults and adults agen around 16 to 35.

So, overall throughout Charlotte Church's long music career her image has been changed and adapted many times; from classical to pop and then to alternative indie rock. As well as her style of music changing, her image has also changed in terms of her actual look; in the first music video she is portrayed as a young innocent girl, in the second she is shown as a sexy rock chick, and in the latter she is seen as a matured, sophisticated, serious woman. Throughout her career her target audience seems to have been continuously changing, however with her latest song it appears that she has tried to keep some aspects from both genres of music which she embarked on in her earlier career. As 'How Not to be Surprised When You're a Ghost' contains her soft yet strong voice from her classical career, but also her power and rock chick image from her teenage pop career.

Dyer's Star Theory
Dyer's Star Theory applies to Charlotte Church as during her child and teenage years her image was constructed by her management, therefore relating to Dyer's point that stars are not real people, however, she did begin to make her own image during her more mature years, which is evident in her latest music video. Charlotte Church's management would have changed her image into the sweet and innocent one when she was younger, and then the sexy and rebellious one when she was a teenager in order to relate to the target audience and persuade them to buy her records, therefore earning them money and making her a more popular and known star.
Also, many pop stars are created and molded to look like real people, but to also be more extraordinary than the average teenager. For instance in Church's 'Crazy Chick' music video' she is shown to be an average teenage girl but with a more rocky edge and with an extraordinary talent.

Music Channels

Music channels that I know:

- MTV
- MTV Rocks
- MTV Dance
- MTV Base
- MTV Dance
- MTV Classic
- 4Music
- Kerrang! TV
- The Vault
- Viva
- VH1

1) Who is the target audience and why?
2) What type of music does the channel play and why?
3) Identify 3-5 examples of artists that feature on a regular basis
4) How is the channel used as a form of branding?
5) How does the logo appeal to the target audience?

MTV

1) The target audience for MTV Music is mainly teenagers and young adults aged from around 15-30 as the majority of the music they play is from the charts, in the genres of pop and R'n'B. These music genres usually appeal to a younger audience due to what the lyrics say and what happens in the music video, as the lyrics about drinking and friends usually relate more to a younger adult than more mature ones. Also the majority of music videos in these genres include dancing, girls and parties, which again can relate to a younger audience more.

2) MTV usually plays music from the charts that fall into the genres of pop and R'n'B, this is because these genres will appeal to their target audience of young adults and also because MTV is a very popular music channel so a large audience will be watching and wanting to hear and listen to the chart music and want to watch the music videos. However, MTV does have many other channels though which will widen their target audience, for example there is MTV Rocks and MTV Dance.

3) Some artists who are shown regularly on MTV are Katy Perry, Rhianna, Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Usher, as they all regularly have hits in the charts and fall under the pop and R'n'B genre, so MTVs target audience will very likely want to listen to their music and see these artists latest music videos.

4) As well as showing many current music videos, MTV also airs many reality TV programmes such as, Jersey Shore, Pimp My Ride, My Super Sweet 16 and The Hills. All of these shows relate to the target audience which are teenagers and young adults, as the actors who are in these reality shows are teenagers and young adults themselves, so the target audience will be able to relate with them and therefore want to watch these programmes.

5) The MTV logo is simple, but it appeals to the target audience as it is bold and the 'TV' is done in a graffiti-style, which relates to the young urban target audience who are often stereotyped to be fans of graffiti and create artwork out of graffiti themselves. Over the years MTV has developed their logo, so it can now be found in many different colours making it look more fun and appealing to the young audience who may be excited by these bright colours as they connote fun and youth, but the logo has still kept the same look and structure of the word 'MTV' as it has developed over the years.

VH1

1) The target audience for VH1consists of male and females aged 25 to 35 years old, this is because VH1 is owned by MTV and was created to attract those people who have grown out of MTVs younger pop and R'nB audience. So this more mature target audience is attracted to VH1 due to music artists such as Robbie Williams being played on it and also due to its many feature shows which sometimes play music from certain decades.

2) VH1 plays a variety of different music genres; this is so that it will appeal to a wider adult audience, as VH1s mature audience will be more open to different genres and this therefore requires VH1 to play different genres of music throughout the day. It also has hour shows that play a specific artist or genre.

3) A variety of artists are regularly played on VH1 and it also has programmes, which play a specific genre such as ‘100 greatest power ballads’. This is because it is a mainstream channel, which has to appeal to a wide audience of adults. Robbie Williams, P!nk and Of Monsters and Men are regularly played on this channel as they are from a variety of different genres and appeal to a more mature audience.

4) VH1 is a subsidiary of MTV, which helps with branding as it can be advertised on all of the other MTV channels, such as MTV Rocks, MTV Dance and MTV Classic. MTV is an extremely popular channel, so the fact that VH1 can be advertised on their channels means that many people will see it's adverts and be intrigued to watch VH1 and see if they like the music it plays.

5) The logo will appeal to the target audience, as it is bright and bold, with the colours pink, yellow and blue which reflect the 80s. This may appeal to the mature target audience as the colours could represent the genres of music they like and the decade of music they enjoy listening to. The connotations of these colours are all very ‘happy’, as blue connotes calmness and peace, yellow connotes happiness and optimism, and pink connotes femininity, energy and love, so this will make the target audience want to watch VH1 as the audience may want to watch the music channel to get this sense of calmness, happiness and energy.

BOX

1) BOX’s target audience is teenagers and young adults aged around 14 to 20 years old, as it plays current chart music which will appeal to this younger audience. The main genres BOX plays is pop and urban and indie which are the main music genres which will appeal to this age group.

2) BOX music channel plays a variety of different current artists and bands from the pop, urban and indie scene, such as Plan B, Nelly Furtado and David Guetta. This is because this genre of music will appeal to BOX's younger target audience as it is mainly mainstream artists and music genres.

3) Rihanna, Conor Maynard, Chris Brown, Drake and Rita Ora are all played on Box on a regular basis as they are currently in the music charts and are very popular with BOX's target audience age group. Also, all of these artists fit within the genres of music BOX aims to play on its music channel in order to appeal to the target audience.

4) It is a subsidiary channel for Kiss, Magic, Heat, Kerrang! and 4music, so BOX can be advertised on all of these channels. This helps make the channel BOX successful as people watching its sister channels will be intrigued to see what music is on BOX's music channel when they see it advertised on a channel that they already like. Also the subsidiary radio station Heat also has a popular weekly magazine which BOX music channel could be advertised in, so they will be advertised to a new audience which will hopefully broaden BOXs target audience.

5) The logo represents the name of the channel, as it has the shape of boxes within the black background; the colours used are just black and white as BOX does not need to be colourful to attract its particular target audience as the young audience will mainly just care about the music it plays rather than the look of the logo. However, the simple colours of the logo adds a sense of elegance and maturity to the channel, and this may attract its target audience of teenagers and young adults as they may make them feel more mature in their taste of music. However, BOXs website is more colourful than its logo as it has the colour pink in it which connotes youth and innocent teenagers, so both colour schemes will attract BOXs target audience.

SCUZZ
1) Scuzz has a rather niche target audience as it attracts people who listen to rock, pop-punk and metal music. However, although it plays a small, niche, selection of music genres that are not usually in the UK top charts, its audience is spread over a large age group of 16 to 30 year olds.

2) Scuzz plays heavy metal, pop-punk and rock music such as Enter Shakari, Slipknot and Lower than Atlantis. This is because it's a niche channel that wants to appeal to its rock-loving target audience, who do not listen to the usual mainstream chart music that can be found on many other music channels.

3) You Me at Six, slipknot, young Guns and Deaf Havana are all regularly played on Scuzz music channel as they all fall under the genres of heavy metal, rock and pop-punk that Scuzz's target audience will be expecting. Scuzz plays different artists and bands in the night compared to in the daytime as it wants to appeal to the different audiences it has throughout the different times of the day. In the daytime Scuzz plays new rock and pop-punk music videos, but during the night Scuzz begins to play its heavy-metal and rock music videos to appeal to the older audience within its target audience.

4) Scuzz has many sister channels including Bliss, The Vault and Tiny Pop. But Scuzz is the only rock and metal music channel within its entire sister channels, however it will be able to advertise itself on its sister channels, therefore possibly gaining Scuzz some more viewers.

5) Scuzz's logo would appeal to its target audience as the word 'scuzz' is written in a metallic silver colour, which looks like metal, and it has sharp edges which further makes the logo look like it has been written in metal, so this therefore relates to the metal and heavy metal music genre which will appeal to Scuzz's target audience.

KISS

1) The target audience of Kiss TV consists mainly of 15 to 25 year old people. Kiss has quite a large target audience as the music it plays is usually music that is in the top charts.

2) Kiss plays a mixture of genres, including dance, hip hop, and r’n’b, this is why Kiss will have a very large target audience, as this is a popular selection of music genres that are usually in the top charts, meaning many people will want to see the latest music videos from these chart topping artists and genres.

3) Chris Brown, Rhianna, Beyonce and Jay Z are regularly played on Kiss TV as they are all r'n'b artists that would appeal to Kiss' target audience, and they are also regularly in the UK charts so Kiss' target audience will want to watch these artists newest music videos.

4) Kiss is used as a form of branding through advertising on 4Music, Kerrang!, Heat and E4 as these are all Kiss' sister companies, so therefore Kiss is able to be advertised on them, and Kiss can have adverts promoting them too. So by being advertised on these popular TV channels and in Heat magazine, Kiss will be able to attract more viewers as all of its sister channels are very popular and have high viewing figures, so lots of people will be able to see its adverts.

5) Kiss' logo is blue which connotes calmness, and the shape is fun, playful and youthful as the bold shape on the left represents the letter ‘K’. So this playful and fun logo will be appealing to Kiss' younger target audience as the shape will be seen as quite cool.

Why do you think MTV is broken down into different channels (base, hits, dance, rocks, classic)?
MTV is broken down into these different channels, including MTV Rocks, MTV Base and MTV Classics, so that MTV can appeal to a wider audience. This is because each channel is associated with a different genre of music, meaning that everyone will most likely enjoy at least one of MTVs channels, so MTV can attract a large audience with its different channels that will appeal to different target audiences.

Why do you think music channels are important in appealing to a target audience?
It is important for a music channel to appeal to a target audience as if music channel didn’t have a specific target audience and played all genres of music then they probably wouldn’t gain a loyal fan base as people would only flick through that channel to see if they like what they’re playing at that particular moment. So if a music channel did have a specific target audience/music genre then they would be able to gain a loyal fan base that would like most of the music they played and would therefore continue to watch that channel and return to it every time they wanted to watched music videos.

Why do you think there are a variety of music channels?
There needs to be a variety of different music channels as there a many different music genres in the world and not everybody likes all of these music genres, so they have to be separated into different music channels in order to satisfy the viewers. Also, a large amount of people in the world enjoy watching music videos, so music channels are in high demand, therefore there needs to be a variety of music channels so that they can appeal to each different target audiences who like different genres of music.

What have you learnt from analysing music channels and how will it help you with your own production?
From analysing many different music channels, I have learnt that a music video can be more exciting if the lyrics are reflected in the video, as it intrigues the audience to carry on watching. Also, I’ve learnt that music videos can be either narrative, performance or concept based, and in addition I now know that music videos should include specific characteristics relating to their music genre in order to appeal to their specific target audience. and satisfy them This will help with my own music video as I now know what kind of techniques I am able to include in my own music video and which specific features should be used in the genre of music I am doing.

What is a music video?

Purpose of a music video
  • To entertain the audience.
  • To give the viewer a better understanding of the song.
  • To sell the song and let the viewer remember the song.
  • To show and reveal the artist/bands image.
  • To make money.
  • So fans can buy into the artists lifestyle.
  • To build a relationship between the artist and fans.
  • To promote the song and artist/band.

The different styles and types of music videos:

  • PERFORMANCE based: Performance based music videos focus on footage of the artist or band actually singing the song and/or playing the instruments to the song, and possibly dancing. This means the band or artist are seen throughout the majority of the video, so their talent is the main focus of the video. Not all genres use this type of music video, but it is mainly seen in rock and indie videos where playing the instruments and the voice is the main aspect of the song.
    e.g. Foo Fighters - Rope

The genre of this music video and the band Foo Fighters, is rock and the music video does contain many codes and conventions of a typical rock music video, such as playing their instrument and singing throughout the video, which is also what makes it a performance based video. Foo fighters appear to have a large target audience, so the target audience for this video is mainly males aged 16-30. The main purpose of this music video is to entertain the audience as it is a purely performance based music video, so it does not follow all of Goodwin's points, such as visuals link with lyrics. The connotations of a typical rock music video that this video follows are; performance based, close ups, band logo being shown and a piece of action being shown when the song reaches its climax.

  • NARRATIVE based:A narrative based music video usually has a story played out throught the entire video or a short movie, usually linking to the lyrics to help the
audience get a better understanding of the song.
    e.g. Britney Spears - Everytime
Britney Spears is a famous pop artist and many of her music videos are usually narrative to enable the audience to understand the lyrics and the artist in more detail. This music video follows her hard life in the eye of the media and her struggle in handling her fame, throughout the video she is noticed by all of the paparazzi, but not by her boyfriend, the one person she wants to notice her. So the narrative and lyrics are about her weakness of wanting his attention, and this links to Goodwin's theory as the lyrics stronly relate to the visulas as for example when Spears sings the line 'I feel so small' in the music video a newborn baby is shown who is tiny in comparison to the adults and the world. The main purpose of this video is to entertain the audience, but to also help them understand the lyrics more and understand what the artist is trying to convey within her lyrics, so this is the main purpose of most narrative based music videos. The target audeince for this music video and Brintney Spears' other music is females aged around 13-25, so the narrative based music video will appeal to this audience as most females of this age enjoy love stories and what to know more about the artists life so they will be throughly entertained by this narrative based music video. This narrative based pop music video does still follow many of the pop gere conventions such as iconic settings, expensive revealing clothing, luxury hotels and close ups of the artists face, however this music video does also show the not so glamourous side of being in the limlight which chalenges the genres conventions as Spears is seen having a fight with her boyfriend and also dying.

  • CONCEPT based:These music videos are centered around one theme or idea and does not follow a narrative, these videos are usually unusual or unique and not many mainstream musicians use this style of music video alone as it can make a music video quite strange.
e.g. Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Green Day are a famous rock band with a target audeince of mainly males aged around 15-30, and the music video for Boulevard of Broken Dreams is strongly concept based as the whole video is based around the lyrics and a person walking through life all alone and being used to the solitude and waiting patiently for someone to join him in his walk through life. The music video does follow some of the genres characteristics, such as their clothing, make up and playing their instruments. All of the band members are wearing shirts, black skinny jeans and converse type trainers which is very typical in relation to their music genre, and they all appear to be wearing black eyeliner which is common to the rock/punk music genre. Due to this music video being concept based the video also strongly applies to one point from Goodwin's theroy which is that the lyrics relate to the visulas, as the lead singer continously sings the line 'I walk alone' as he walks through different backdrops in the msuic video. This concept based music video is very dependent on the editing effects and camera angles, as these help create the dreary scene, and the props and location used are important aswell, as they relate to the sad tone of the song. The purpose of this music video is mainly to entertain and also to set the tone of the song, as concept based music videos don't usually offer msuch more information about the song as they focus on expanding one idea usually.
