Analysis of Music Genres

Music videos are extremely important in building a relationship between the artist and the audience as it allows them to see the artists lifestyle and it helps them to understand the lyrics more. There are many different music genres, and each genre comes with its own music video characteristics, such as; rap music videos usually contain provocative women and expensive jewellery, and dance music videos usually contain lots of performance based shots of people dancing, fun and bright atmospheres and expensive cars.

Drake - Over (Rap)

Drake's music genre is rap and his audience consists of mainly females aged 16 to 25, the music video for Over shows the craziness of Drake's overnight rise to fame and how much has changed in his life. The music video starts with a long shot of Drake sitting on the end of a bed, this quickly changes to a close up using a jump cut. an effect is used to make Drakes silhouette flash with different images and colours, which looks like fire. When the shot changes back to a long shot of Drake sitting on the end of a bed we are able to see the setting behind him, which consists of different projected moving images, such as a road and busy streets, on the walls behind him.
Throughout the video fast pace editing is used, especially when the backgrounds changed, this excites the audience as it matches the quick lyrics and his previous life. it also informs the audience that his life is moving at a much quicker pace that his previous life was, which also establishes his style.
After the lyrics 'But it's far from over' are said the first time the editing effect, fade, this effect helps show the audience that the song has moved on and reflects what Drake was saying in his lyrics. The fade effect is important as it slows the music video down for a few seconds to show the audience the main points in his life.
Another long shot is used when Drake is standing on the left hand side of the screen in front of a plain white wall singing the lyrics 'I know way too many people here right now that I didn't know last year, who the f*** are y'all?'. Whilst he sings these words a moving image of lots of people walking is projected onto the screen which strongly relates to the lyrics. Soon after this the music, lyrics and video slows down for a few seconds which creates a dramatic effect, and to support this a slow explosion is projected onto the wall. The speed then picks back up again as a close up of Drake rapping on the left side of the screen, the fire from the explosion in the previous frame continues into this shot as it is edited over the footage with the words 'One thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain' coming up quickly in bold white writing at the same time as Drake sings them. Also at this point a low angle is used which gives Drake power and authority.
After this the shot changes to a distorted image of Drake rapping, and this makes the visuals reflect the lyrics as when the screen goes distorted he sings the words 'And I swear I got the s*** that makes these bitches go insane'.
A characteristic of most rap genre music videos is then shown to us as a pretty women appears on the screen acting provocatively. is shown to us in a shot which involves the colour gold a lot, which connotes richness and value. The colour gold and Drakes ability to rap relates to Dyer's theory, Paradox 1, as Drake is shown as an ordinary person with his clothing, but his ability to rap and dance so well gives him an extraordinary quality. The whole video relates to the rap genre as it defines Drake's emotion/life that he has been through and the audience would be interested in watching this as this is a typical convention and the audience are interested in learning more about the artist.

Flo Rida - Club can't handle me ft. David Guetta (Dance)

Flo Rida is a popular artist who performs under the genre of dance music, his target audience consists of people aged 16-25 who enjoy the music genre dance. The music video for 'Club can't handle me' is mainly performance based, which is common for dance videos, and it is based around a party atmosphere with clips form the film Step Up 3, as the song was created for this movie.
The music video begins with a long shot of two expensive cars outside a busy club, the use of the props, the expensive cars, is a typical aspect of music videos of the dance genre as they show wealth and power and show that the artist(s) have an expensive lifestyle. This helps the audience build a relationship with the artist as it enables them to see the artists lifestyle and what it is like to be the artist, this will make the audeince to continue to watch the music video as they will want to lewarn more about the artist, as they may aspire to be just like him. Another long shot is used which also helps to express the artists expensive and fun lifestyle, in this shot we see Flo Rida singing to the camera with a large crowd dancing to his music around him. In terms of mise-en-scene and costumes, in the long shot you can see that Flo Rida is wearing a large gold chain which again shows his admirable, rich lifestyle.
In addition, a close up is used when Flo Rida was singing and dancing to the camera and this further shows off his expensive jewellery and emphasises the fun and enthusiastic atmosphere of the song and music video, which is a typical feature of a dance genre music video.
Further on through the video a split screen is used to show on one side the lively party atmosphere i the club, and on the other side a deserted street, this exaggerates how fun and enthusiastic the atmosphere is inside the club when the music is being played, compared to the empty streets. Furthermore, an aerial shot is used to show us the vast crowd and show us how they are all having fun and dancing to the music. Having people dance in a music video of the dance genre is an extremely important aspect and most dance artists use this in their music videos.
Throughout the music video clips from the film Step Up 3 are used, as the song was created to be used in this film, and all of the clips show people dancing in time with the music. The whole party atmosphere links strongly with the lyrics as he sings lyrics such as 'the club can't even handle me right now' whilst people are falling through walls as the club is so full.

Fall Out Boy - Dance, Dance (Punk/Rock)

Fall Out Boy are a punk rock band who's main target audience was teenagers and young adults aged around 15-25. Their music video for 'Dance, Dance' is highly performance and narrative based which is common in many rock music videos. The mixture of the two types of music videos allows their audience to see the band they like performing, but also gain a more in depth view into the song and it allows them to understand the band members more, as they are the ones acting, so it also adds a sense of humour. This allows the audience to gain a stronger relationship with the band as they can begin to understand the band members personalities as they act the narrative part of the music video out, and it also helps the audience understand the message behind the song better as they can follow the narratives storyline.
The music video begins with the music playing quietly in the background whilst a variety of shots are being used to show us that a boy is asking a girl to their homecoming dance, an aeriel shot is used to show us the words 'homecoming' burning in the grass to help us understand the narrative. The music then stops as the narrative is played out which shows a typical high school geek taking his date to homecoming and acting nervously. Once they enter the hall where the event is taking place, we are shown a long shot of the band on stage with a large crowd of people in front of them watching them play, it is set out like a typical music gig, but we know that it is continuing with the storyline and that they are actually perfroming at the homecoming.
In the narrative there is also the typical teenage popular couple who try to make fun of the main geeky couple. After this they all join the large crowd watching the band perfrom adn eventually we see another aerial shot but this one shows the geeky boy crowd surfing, this adds humour to the video and the aspect of crowd surfing is a big factor of rock music videos. Throughout the music video there is continous refrence to the link between the lyrics and the visuals as the main lyrics of the song are 'dance, dance' and everyshot appears to have someone dancing in it.
As the song reaches it's climax there are multiple shots of the band jumping around and playing their instruments and this strongly reflects the characteristics of a rock music video. Also during this section of the video it shows the party getting out of control as the teachers go in to panic mode and there are dance offs with people crowding around them, the chaos in this video is also a characteristic of most rock music videos, and also there is a refrence to drugs as the narrative continues and the setting changes to in the boys toilets and a teacher comes into to break them up. The idea of drugs is strongly associated with the whole rock music culture and is usually worked into rock music videos.

Each music genre appears to have varying micro elements, and this is to make the genre distinctive throughout the music video, I can see this by looking at the three music videos I have just analysed. Drake's music video for Over appears to have a more serious meaning and the pace and editing of the video appears to be a lot slower than the pace in Flo Rida's music video. This is to show the different connotations of the music videos genre and to make the visuals relate to the sound and lyrics. All three music videos appear to use many different varieties of shots, sucha as close ups and long shots, but they are all still effective in showing the distinct differences between each music genre. Also, Flo Rida's dance music video uses more props than the other two music videos to show his wealth and luxurious lifestyle, such as expensive cars and jewellery.
The Fall Out Boy song contains is very narrative based which is different to the other music videos, and this shows that the artists in the rock genre take themselves less seriously and the shots of mosh pits and large crowds jumping to their music also strongly relates to the rock genre.

  1. This post on music genres shows a good understanding of how micro elements are used within the music industry and you have covered the main points from the music videos. You have also considered the role of the conventions well too.

To make your analysis more detailed you need to consider the role of the target audience and how they build a relationship with the artists

  2. This post demonstrates a good understanding of the different music videos that you have analysed. You have considered the micro elements and examples well. Now you need to focus on the audience in more detail. You have started to do this, but your points need to be expanded in more detail.
