Group Magazine Advert

After looking at all of our groups final magazine adverts we decided to use Carrie's second magazine advert as our final one as we felt it reflected the dance genre and our artists image the best.
Her advert has a black background with bright orange and red writing which stands out as the colours contrast with the dark background. In the bottom left side of the advert is an image of our artist looking up above him, his position in this photo makes it look as though he is reading the writing that is on the poster. By having the artist look at the at the writing it will help guide the readers attention to the information.

The advert contains all of the necessary details the reader will need to know, such as the artists name, album title, record label, hit singles etc. By having all of this information written in a bold and bright coloured font will attract the readers attention as their eyes will be drawn to the red and orange colours as they flick through the magazine. Also the colours red and orange both connote energy, passion and fun which all relate to the dance music genre.
The artists name, 'Mike Smith' and the albums title 'Stay Awake are in the largest font as they are the most important piece of information that the reader has to see first. If the reader sees these two names first then they might recognise them and be intrigued to continue reading the advert.
Above the artists name is also the artists record label, Data Records, as this is an important piece of information for the reader to know if they want to find out more about the artist or see what other artists or bands are on the label.

Around the image of the artist Carrie has put a white shadow that looks like a spotlight around the artist. This white colour contrasts with the dark background and makes the artists image stand out and he then becomes the focus point of the poster, as well as the artists and albums name.
In addition, the information of the artists hit singles has been given and this will excite the reader and draw them in to continue reading the advert if they have heard some of his hit songs. Also the words 'Out Now' have been written in capital letters in a bold font, this makes this information stand out even further on the black background and will attract the readers attention.

The image below was Carrie's first attempt at a magazine advert:

This is still a very good magazine advert with many conventions from the dance genre, such as the bright and fun background, the brightly coloured writing, the website link and the artists name etc. She has still used an image of the artist in this magazine advert, but this time it has been cropped and placed into the centre of the poster. So it is already clear that Carrie's skills on photoshop have improved in her second magazine advert as in the second one she has added a white faded shadow around the picture rather than just cropping on to the page.

The writing of the artists name links very well with the dance genre as it is written in a bold and fun font in the colour blue with shadows of the letters in the colours pink and white. All of these colours are very bright which links to the lights used in clubs and parties which are strongly associated with the dance music genre.
Carrie's background for her first magazine advert links well with thee dance genre as it is in a bold blue colour and has white bubbles on it which look like the reflection of light, this connotes the idea of strobe lights and spotlights which are regularly used in clubs which play dance music.

Although Carrie's first attempt at the magazine advert is very good, I believe her second attempt links more with the dance genre and will appeal to her target audience more and catch their attention. It is clear that her skills of using photoshop had improved a lot in her second magazine advert compared to her first magazine advert, so this is why we decided to use this advert as our final group magazine advert.

This was Georgia's first attempt at a magazine advert:

This was Georgia's first attempt at creating a magazine advert for our artist, Mike Smith. The colour scheme for her advert is black and red, and the bright red colour on the dark black background creates a big contrast making it stand out more. The artists name is written in capital letters and has been put into this bright red colour and it stands out very well drawing the readers attention straight to it, this is important as this is the most important piece of information on the poster and if the readers recognise his name they will be intrigued and will continue to read the advert. The image of the artist is a close up shot of his face, she has positioned it in the middle of the advert and creates a bold focal point for the reader to look at so they be able to immediately recognise his face.
She has included some important information on her advert which are typical conventions of a magazine advert, such as the record labels name, the picture of the artists album it is promoting and his number one single.
Overall, this is a very good attempt at a first magazine advert and it contains many of the typical magazine advert characteristics. Also the colour scheme is very bold which creates an interest for the reader and the centre positioned photo will intrigue the reader to continue reading the advert.

This is Georgia's second magazine advert:

This is a very good magazine advert and it follows the same colour scheme as her first magazine advert attempt which is good, as the bright bold colour red will draw in the readers attention. Instead of having a small image of the artist like in her first magazine advert she has now chosen to have a large full bodied photo of the artist that takes up most of the page. The fact that she has used a full bodied image of the artist this time may excite the reader as they will be able to see what the artist is wearing so they will get a sense of his style and image.
Her idea of having the artists name written vertically could draw in the readers attention as it is very large and bold and the capital letters make it stand out further. Much like her first magazine advert, she has included all of the necessary and important information and when stating the album includes the 'NO1 SINGLE STAY AWAKE' she has put the title of the song in a larger font and in the colour red, this makes it stand out so the reader will be drawn in to read this and if they recognise this song it may persuade them to buy his album.

Both of Georgia's magazine adverts were very good and included all of the necessary conventions of a magazine advert, but it is clear that her second magazine is much better as her skills have developed and it looks like a professional magazine advert with bold writing and a full bodied image of the artist. However. we all decided to use Carrie's magazine advert as our final group one due to the effects she has added to her images through the editing process and also due to her bold colour scheme.

  1. This post demonstrates some group planning and discussions. You have evaluated Carrie's and Georgia's designs well and you have considered their stregths and choices well.

Now you need to include your own designs to show further understanding as to why your group selected to submit Carrie's.

The group advert demonstrates a basic understanding of conventions and creating a relationship with the dance conventions.
